How we enable instant gratification in kids and why it makes it worse for kids.

  • Ever seen a child throwing a tantrum at a mall and the embarassed parents hastily  pleading and bargaining with the child or giving in? We all have been victim to this at one point or another. May be it was a toy in the window that the cause of all the tears and since it was relatively inexpensive, we give in rather than drag the child away, kicking and screaming. May be it was the cake or muffin instead of the healthier breakfast that we knew will make them cranky later. Maybe it is not putting away their toys as they ought to.

It is difficult for  us as parents to see our kids unhappy, sad, frustrated, or tired. Yet we do not need experts to tell us that life will bring up all these emotions and it may be better to let them get used to dealing with them when the issues are little than when they are adults with adult issues. And the experts are also saying what we know instinctively. That this generation gets their way too easily and this leads to unhappiness and frustration later on in life. Having everything may not be the best path to happiness in the long run.
